Is there a BAD time to see Victoria Falls?

Hey Reader,

Summer's in full swing in some parts of Southern Africa, in spite of the unexpected snowfall in KZN. You may be starting to think about planning your trip to Victoria Falls!

If you did a Google search, you might end up a little confused about the best time to visit these iconic falls. It really depends on what you want to do while you're there. Here are the facts in a nutshell:

• High Water Season (February to May): This is when the falls are at their fullest and most spectacular due to the rainy season. The massive volume of water produces an impressive spray and mist, making for dramatic views - but this can sometimes obscure the falls themselves.

This period is ideal if you're looking to experience the sheer power and magnificence of the falls, with March to May often recommended as the peak time to witness the waterfall in full flow. But your photos might be a bit disappointing.

• Dry Season (May to October): As the dry season progresses, the water levels decrease, reducing the mist and allowing for clearer views of the falls. This period is better for activities like white-water rafting, which becomes safer and more enjoyable as the water levels lower.

The visibility of the geological formations of the falls is also better during the low water season, particularly from August to January.

Plus, the dry season is best for wildlife viewing as animals congregate around water sources, making it a great time for safaris in nearby parks like Chobe and Hwange National Parks.

Of course nothing in nature is ever guaranteed. I visited the falls in December a couple years ago and they were still at a trickle. But it was still a spectacular site, and the kayaking was fantastic. Be sure to wander through the rainforest and take in the scenery from all the angles!
