Unexpected items to pack, and STILL use just a carryon

Hey Reader,

Happy Sunday! I hope your travel plans are going well - or your plans to start planning.

We've been talking about how to pack for even long - several months long - trips to Africa in just a carryon, and I've been getting questions about unexpected things TO include, even when we're trying to take only the necessities.

➦ I mentioned that I always take a sarong - basically just a large rectangle of fabric - because it has so many uses.

A Turkish towel is a similar idea, but tends to be a bit thicker if you want a little more warmth, or just prefer the look.

➦ Another thing I always pack is a long narrow scarf, especially if I'll be travelling during a hotter time of year (Africa isn't always hot everywhere!). If you soak it with water, any temp, squeeze it out and wrap it around your neck, you'll be shocked at how it will cool you off. I know I was the first time.

When it starts to warm up, I'll turn it around so the outside is now inside. When that warms up, I'll soak it again and start over. It has made a huge difference for me on sweltering hot afternoons in the bush.

➦ One more necessity is a good quality - or not, depending on your usage - packable daypack. These are made of thin, light nylon that folds into a little pouch so they take up next to no room in your bag. Or you could use it as your personal item on your flight.

It's perfect for filling with a water bottle, camera, sunscreen, etc. to take on the safari vehicle for game drives. There a things you'll need with you, and this is a great option for keeping them all together and accessible.

I also use mine when I'm exploring the cities and towns - water bottle, jacket, etc - and as a grocery bag or to carry souvenirs I pick up while I'm out.

➦ Finally, I've learned that a car power inverter is priceless. There've been times when I've found myself on a self drive - or even guided - safari with nowhere to charge my camera batteries. A USB port just doesn't cut it for this one.

With a car power inverter I can have one battery in its AC charger plugged into the vehicles 12-volt power socket while I use the other one.

** Just one more - I always bring along a pair of flip flops to wear back at camp and while driving or riding a safari vehicle. Slipping them on feels especially great after a long bush walk.
