Hey Reader!

As summer starts to wane in the Western world, it's definitely time to start think about chasing summer to Southern Africa!

I've had a lot of questions recently about what to pack for a trip to Africa, both to be able to travel with just one carry-on bag and are the essentials you might not think of before you go.

Over the years I've learned how much easier travelling is when I have just one bag to worry about. I've also discovered how little I really need when I'm travelling around Africa.

I've found that the easiest way to save the most space is to pick just a few shirts, pants, and shorts, and get used to the fact that I'll be wearing just these things over and over again.

I choose good quality things that aren't going to fall apart, and that are quick drying. Bonus if they can be layered for cool mornings and evenings. "Safari" or "travel clothes" are NOT necessary.

When you're on safari you may come across people who make money by laundering clothes for travellers - this is a win for both of you (but please rinse out your undies yourself).

Or you can hand wash your own things. I always pack laundry sheets/strips for this. Tuck them in a paper envelope or zip top bag - they take up next to no room, and don't make a mess.

I take just one pair of shoes - I tend to go for closed shoes for safety on bush walks - and wear them on the plane. Then I'll tuck my favourite Teva flip flops along the sides on my bag.

When it comes to toiletries, I try to bring what I'll need because I can't use fragranced stuff on my skin. Solid products like shampoo and conditioner, soap, moisturizer, and whatever else I can find are game changers for carry-on.

Solid products have come a long way in recent years. My go-to brand is Ethique. The work great and don't bother my skin, plus they sell a variety of solid skin care products, too.

These are the bare bones of how I travel in Africa for 6 months at a time with just a carry-on. Below I've linked to a couple of articles with more info, advise and products that help.

Travel Tip: Before you book your flight to Africa, see if there is an airline that will take you there that offers a layover program.

These programs allows passengers with long layovers to explore the layover city through guided tours or discounted stays.

These programs are designed to make layovers easier to take by turning them into mini-travel experiences. This is an amazing way to see more of the world!

And as always, feel free to hit reply if you have questions, comments, or just want to share. I'd love to hear from you.
